In the run up to the 32nd British Society for Refractive Surgery (BSRS) meeting in June 2025, looking back at our meeting in Oxford last year, as the current President of the BSRS, I’m so grateful for the brilliant teamwork by our talented Council members and our society management team, Laura and Jan.

Last year was our first joint meeting with the UK-CXL Consortium. Sally Hayes & Colm McAlinden put together a wonderful programme with Mor Dickman, Seema Anand and Sian Morgan!

Many corneal surgeons would love to improve eyesight in keratoconus without hard contact lenses. Exciting developments in CAIRS is improving corneal shape using natural tissue implants.

Professor Jorge L. Alió showcased his wealth of experience and sharp intellect in his Medal lecture about therapeutic surgery for keratoconus.

We were honoured to have Shady Awwad, Andreia Rosa, Prof. Mazen Sinjab, Vincenzo Maurino, Mayank Nanavaty and Laura de Benito Llopis sharing expertise.

It’s challenging to know which intraocular lens (IOL) to choose and Johnny Moore, Francesco Carones MD, Amir Hamid FRCOphth FWCRS CertLRS, Hatch Mukherjee and Andrzej Dmitriew, MD, FWCRS gave us new insights.

Clare O’Donnell & Tahera Bhojani-Lynch‘s interactive Optometrist/Ophthalmologist session was a highlight.

We had a brilliant BSRS Medal lecture by Damien Gatinel about the fundamentals of IOL calculation, raising lively post-lecture discussion.

Huge thank you to Julian Bedford Instinctive and Ziemer Ophthalmic Systems for generously providing a fun wetlab creating femtosecond lenticules with the innovative Z8 laser.

One of the best things about BSRS is our round table discussions with world experts about clinical challenges and cutting edge technology. Our speakers and industry colleagues frequently comment on the high quality of engagement by our delegates. These open discussions are how all of us – clinicians, trainees, industry, ensure we are up to date, and aware of potential pitfalls and tips on providing the best possible care with new technology, and potentially find “blue sky” solutions for our patients.

We were delighted to welcome a new cohort of trainees to BSRS, with Ahmed Shalaby Bardan PhD and Masara Laginaf‘s YO session.

Finally it was a great pleasure to have Sid Goel’s beautiful and talented daughter Anya Goel @anyagoelofficial performing live for us on Saturday evening!

Grateful to receive wonderful feedback from the very talented Prof Shady Awwad about the high quality our meeting, and from our trainee Chris Way who kindly shared a video of his feedback.

Look forward to seeing everyone in Oxford in June 2025, we have a hands-on CAIRS wetlab and symposium, and an exciting line up of world leading speakers and topics – optimising presbyopia correction & presbyopia IOLs, ICL sizing and improving outcomes, therapeutic laser femto and excimer, correcting refractive complications with laser, complex cataract surgery, and our YO session on refractive surgery training!
