At the recent British Society for Refractive Surgery (BSRS) Annual Meeting I had the honour of speaking about Multifocal Intraocular Implants for Presbyopia Correction. My colleagues Mark Wevill, Wolfgang Rhia, Elizabeth Law and Dan Reinstein joined me in the symposium.
Multifocal intraocular implants give the greatest freedom from spectacles, and higher patient satisfaction compared to blended vision/monovision. They correct both presbyopia and cataract in a single procedure. Carrying out presbyopic correction on the cornea may mean that that eye is no longer suitable for a multifocal implant. Side effects of glare and haloes are reducing as the implants improve with technological advances.
There was a lively debate about presbyopic laser correction versus multifocal implants, which the speakers and audience enjoyed!
